The Core Component provides a broad understanding of the science sector inclusive of the following topics:

  • Biological molecules
  • Cell structures
  • Microbiology
  • Immunology
  • Chemical reactions
  • Rates of reaction
  • Formulae and equations
  • Particles and radiation
  • Electricity
  • Magnetism and electromagnetism
  • Waves
  • Gas laws
  • Health and safety in a laboratory environment
  • Ethical considerations in scientific research

In addition to the core content, each student must choose one of the following specialisms in technical science:

  • laboratory sciences
  • food sciences
